Watershed Planning

Rivanna River Basin Project (1998)

The Rivanna River Basin Project was initiated in 1996 by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) to assess past and current conditions of the Rivanna River and its tributaries, to gather information that could be used to maintain and improve water quality, and to provide this information to citizens and decision makers within the region. The project was guided by a 24-member Rivanna River Roundtable consisting of stakeholders from all parts of the Rivanna Watershed, who represented all the political jurisdictions and a variety of interests, and included farmers, developers, designers, environmentalists, educators, scientists, preservationists, historians, and authors. The project, including studies and recommendations, is documented by the State of the Basin Report (1998).

Rivanna Watershed Needs Assessment (2001-2002)

The goal of the Rivanna Watershed Needs Assessment was to identify and assess opportunities, strategies, and mechanisms for improving the protection of the Rivanna River and its watershed. The assessment was conducted in various phases which included confidential interviews with state, local and regional agencies, community groups, and non-profits. The results of these interviews and future efforts were discussed at the Rivanna Watershed Symposium, followed by a Steering Committee to finalize the recommendations from the Symposium into a plan. You can download the final report below, as well as see all supporting documentation from UVA's Institute for Environmental Negotiations (IEN) website: Rivanna Watershed Needs Assessment.
